Mexico, the End of the Revolution
Published in Paperback by Praeger Publishers (October, 2001)
Authors: Donald C. Hodges and Ross Gandy
Average review score:

A Perfect Achievement
Donald C. Hodges and Ross Gandy have written many excellent books on the Mexican Revolution, but this book may just be the best yet. Providing a tour of the landscape and unmasking the politics behind its volatile tendencies, the authors carefully examine the events and politics contributing to and arising from the Revolution. While this is a must-read for anyone serious about understanding the history of Mexico, one must be prudent enough in their study to also consult the other titles by Donald C. Hodges and Ross Gandy concerning this subject. This brilliant work by two expert historians and revolutionary thinkers is sure to capture the attention of many, many students of philosophy and comparative revolutions. A perfect achievement? Indeed!

Mexico: A History
Published in Paperback by Univ of Oklahoma Pr (Trd) (March, 1989)
Author: Robert Ryal Miller
Average review score:

A Useful History of Mexico for the General Reading Public
Robert Ryal Miller's "Mexico: A History" is a reliable, readable survey history of Mexico from its pre-historic origins to the late 20th century. I have used the book as a text for a course on Mexican history for senior citizens. Almost unanimously the course particpants have rated the book very highly.

Miller has done the general reading public a favor by offering a reliable survey history of Mexico of about 375 pages. Its convenient length enables the general reader to gain a better understanding of our southern neighbor about whom many of us know little though with whom we share a 2,000-mile border. There are excellent, much longer books or multi-volume books on Mexican history, but their length makes them too daunting and sometimes too scholarly for the first-time reader of Mexican history to pick up. If after reading a sound history book of Miller's size, the general reader is moved to delve further into Mexican history, he or she can turn to longer books, with a basis established to assimilate more readily the greater detail of a longer history. In my research, I have found only one other recently published survey history of Mexico of the same convenient length which is also historically reliable; while that book is readable as well, I felt it was a little more technical than Miller's and perhaps assumed the uninformed reader would be able to grasp some of the historical concepts more quickly than the experience in my course has indicated.

Miller's book could have been made even more readable and useful if each chapter had begun with a brief introduction of the content to follow in the particular chapter and concluded with a brief summary at the chapter's end. Within each chapter the book would have benefited from the insertion of topical headings when the text moved from one major event or theme to another. These simple editing techniques would have made it easier for the reader to absorb and organize in his or her mind the extensive factual information in each chapter.

In short, for the general reader who wants to gain a readable and reliable overview of the panorama of Mexican history, Miller has done the reader a great favor.

Middle American Herpetology: A Bibliographic Checklist
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Missouri Pr (Txt) (November, 1988)
Authors: Jaime Villa, Jamie Villa, and Jerry D. Johnson
Average review score:

A Comprehensive Literature Review
This is a review of all major literature on Middle American Herpetology, herein defined as the region from southeastern Mexico through Panama. There is a brief introduction and description of methods in English and Spanish. This is followed by a table listing publications which deal with a specific taxa or group. The body of the book is a listing of taxa in Amphibia and Reptilia at species level. For each of 782 species, the authors list citations for key literature, illustrations, and distribution. This is followed by a bibliography of literature cited and a scientific name index. There are 91 color plates, 5 to 7 per page, in a section at the front of the book, and 21 small black and white plates inserted into the body of the text next to the relevant taxa. These photographs, which show a small range of the species covered, are very attractive, but they do not add appreciably to the overall value of the text. Overall this is an excellent book and an invaluable scientific resource to any researcher working on the herpetofauna of the region. I find this book to be extremely useful, and it is consistently my first refernce for bibliographic material.

Milenios De Mexico / Mexico Through the Millennia (Spanish Language Edition, 3-Volume Set)
Published in Hardcover by Editorial Pax Mexico (01 August, 2000)
Author: Humberto Musacchio
Average review score:

Excellent encyclopedia set about everything Mexican!
Milenios de Mexico is a lavishly illustrated, full-color, hardcover, Spanish-language encyclopedia about everything and everyone Mexican. Antiquities, geography, science, art, sports, popular culture, music, literature, food, religion, and social and educational institutions are all covered in some depth with a large number of specific entries. The biographical information in these volumes alone justifies their acquisition, and the number and type of graphics leave many American encyclopedias of similar size and scope behind in a cloud of dust. A superb reference work for anyone studying Mexican history or the Spanish language.

Highly recommended
- Two exceptional writers have combined talents in showcasing the most popular as well as some of the more lesser-known, eclectic destinations the Distrito Federal has to offer. Mexican photographers Pablo Monasterio Ortiz, From Planeta Journal - Raul Ortega and Maritza Lopez contributed exceptional black and white photos that along with Bob Race's illustrations complement the text. Sideboxes examine environmental issues and even city websites. Travelers will find the book is not limited to the megalopolis, but it also profiles nearby destinations, including Valle de Bravo, Puebla and Taxco.

More Maya Missions: Exploring Colonial Chiapas
Published in Paperback by Espadana Pr (January, 1995)
Author: Richard D. Perry
Average review score:

Absolute Must for any Chiapas interest
I am the author of the "Adventure Guide to the Yucatan," a guidebook to the ruins and sites of Mexico's fascinating peninsula. I have been a fan of Richard Perry and his wife's writing since reading the "Maya Missions" book they did on the many ruined colonial missions in the Yucatan. This title is equally worthwhile with vivid descriptions of history and much detail on the colonial remnants of the Spanish church, in seldom-visited Chiapas. And their pen and ink drawings are evocative of the romance and tragedy of the conquest. A great book to make your Chiapas visit even better.

More Than Petticoats Remarkable New Mexico Women (More than petticoats)
Published in Paperback by Falcon Publishing Company (01 September, 2001)
Author: Beverly West
Average review score:

An excellent sampling of New Mexico women in history
More Than Petticoats: Remarkable New Mexico Women is an excellent sampling of women in New Mexico history. This book offers brief biographies of women, crossing ethnic and cultural barriers and spanning several hundred years of herstory. Some of the women included in this volume are Mabel Dodge Luhan (patron of early Southwest Arts), Mary Colter (Fred Harvey/Santa Fe Railroad architect), Georgia O'Keefe (aritist), Maria Martinez (potter),and Elsie Clews Parsons (anthropolgist). Seven other women or groups of women (like the Harvey Girls) are also included. This enjoyable book of significant women is a wonderful volume for those who would like to know a little about a lot of people from one book. I particularly appreciated the regional/state focus because I was familiar with most of the women written about. "More Than Petticoats" is a series focusing on the women who were influential in individual states, and I would definately read more from this series!
